AN APPEAL

The 20th century will be evaluated as complex and varied in the history of mankind but it will be always linked with the unexpected development of science and the computer revolution. Computers have changed and will transform even more communications, scientific studies, information horizons, people's lives.
This revolution is based on the ideas and colossal work of an American scientist with a Bulgarian family name, John Atanasoff, the "father" of the modern computer. All his life (1903-1996), John Atanasoff emphasized proudly his Bulgarian roots. His grandfather perished in the April Uprising against Turkey in 1876 when his father, Ivan Atanasoff, was only several months old.
John Atanasoff created the first functioning calculator, possessing the main principles of the computer - the binary system, the regenerative memory, logical schemes as elements of software and electronic components for storing data. However he engaged in long law suits to prove the scientific priority of his invention. The fight ended in 1973 with the granting of his authorship. In 1990, President George Bush awarded him with the National Medal of Science and Technology.
On that particular day, John Atanasoff once again laid stress on his Bulgarian origin.
John Atanasoff visited Bulgaria, his father's birth country, twice. He was interested, excited, willing to establish contacts with Bulgarian scholars.

TO TURN THIS MONUMENT INTO ONE OF THE LANDMARKS OF THE CAPITAL CITY OF BULGARIA!
LET GENERATIONS OF THE 21ST CENTURY SEE THIS MONUMENT AS A SYMBOL OF HUMAN CREATIVE GENIUS.
