THE VISIT OF JOHN VINCENT ATANASOFF
II AND FAMILY
TO BULGARIA
Carried out on an invitation extended by the
President of the Republic of Bulgaria as well as the TANGRA TanNakRa
All Bulgarian Foundation, the visit of the son of John Atanasoff,
the prominent inventor of the computer of today, an American who
took pride in his Bulgarian background, took place from 29 May
through June 5, 2001. During their visit, the guests were received
by His Excellency Richard Miles, the US Ambassador to Bulgaria,
as well as the mayor of Sofia, Mr. Stephan Sofiansky.
A touring trip around Bulgaria was organized for the guests, and
Mrs. Alice Atanasoff, the widow of the Inventor, his son John
Atanasoff II, and the other family members who accompanied them
met with prominent public figures at the towns of Sofia, Blaghoevgrad,
Pleven, Veliko Turnovo, Varna, Yambol, the village of Boyadjik
, and Plovdiv.
At Varna the guests were guests of honor to the ceremony on the
occasion of June 2, the Remembrance Day for those who had perished
for the liberty of Bulgaria.
Especially moving was the meeting of the Atanasoff family with
the public figures and community of the village of Boyadjik, the
birthplace of Ivan Atanasoff, the Father of the Inventor.
THE VISIT OF ALICE ATANASOFF
AND FAMILY TO BULGARIA IN 2002
Alice Atanasoff, John Atanasoff’s wife, and members
of the family visited Republic of Bulgaria on 16-29 June 2002
at the invitation of the Initiative Committee for Building a Monument
to John Atanasoff and TANGRA TanNakRa All Bulgarian Foundation.
During the stay, they took part in the discussion of projects
for the new monument to John Atanasoff.
The Atanasoffs paid a visit to Sofia, Plovdiv, Yambol, Nesebar,
Varna, Shumen, Ruse and Veliko Turnovo. They went to see the cultural-historical
sites related to those towns.
THE VISIT OF TAMARA BURTON,
THE INVENTOR’S GRANDDAUGHTER, TO BULGARIA IN 2003
Tammara Burton, John Atanasoff’s granddaughter,
visited Republic of Bulgaria on 8-14 January 2003 at the invitation
of TANGRA TanNakRa All Bulgarian Foundation.
She paid a visit to Sofia, Stara Zagora, Plovdiv, Pazardjik and
other towns in order to popularise her grandfather’s work and
the initiative of building a monument to the inventor.
She was a guest to Slavi Trifonov’s television show.
Tammara Burton visited a children’s home in the village of Yardjilovtsi,
Yambol region, and made a donation for the children.
