In brief :
The
reign of emperor Kaloyan, to which the book of Nikolai Ovcharov has been dedicated,
could be presumed as typical for the epochs of triumph in Bulgarian Middle ages.
It contains in itself everything, which the Bulgarian would expect to see in his
past: great military victories, territorial expenditure, high authority of the
central government, active foreign policy, surpassing national and regional boundaries
and having acquired pan-European significance. The expose, which the reader will
hopefully read through with interest, will show to you that the period of upsurge
under emperor Kaloyan would be unthinkable without combining military victories
with diplomacy, hardness with compromise, cruelty with charity, internal mobilization
with promoting favourable international conditions.
