In brief :
William
E. Gladstone was one of the colossuses of 19th-century English politics, four
times prime minister and patriarch of European liberalism. It was good fortune
for the Bulgarians to find in him a person of such calibre to identify himself
more or less with the Bulgarian national cause (as well as with the aspirations
of all nations striving for freedom and self-determination). Gladstone stood in
defense of Bulgaria in one of the most critical moments of its history and thus
he became a kind of a paternal figure in the eyes of more than one generation
of Bulgarians. In this sense Gladstone became a kind of personalized link between
two countries lying at the opposite ends of the continent but still sharing the
common history and values of Europe.
